Since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and DayZ popularized the genre, Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode catapulted it into the zeitgeist, Apex Legends proved the format could adapt, and Tetris 99 extended the philosophy beyond shooters, major gaming studios are turning to “last player standing” gameplay hooks in order to build a player base.Īs the genre continues to dominate attention, transfixing players with its last-man-standing hook, the origins of the battle royale become blurrier and blurrier. We learn pretty quickly that Kal and Elena have been together in the past and now Elena is set to marry the heir of another prestigious family, a violent man, who she feels nothing but hatred towards. The story switches POV’s between Kal and Elena, Kal is a hit man for a notorious mafia boss, who just so happens to be Elena’s father. I’ve not really read much dark romance, so I picked a few easy kindle reads from this list to try and this was one of the ones that came up on multiple lists. ![]() ![]() This was a short little read for a plane trip I took recently, from a Dark Romance rec list on TikTok. I’ve been on a roll this year, so the 37th book I’ve read so far was Promises and Pomegranates by Sav R Miller. ![]() ![]() They read an eye chart, look through a lift-the-flap phoropter (that big machine optometrists use), and try on different pairs of glasses-movie star glasses! superhero glasses! mad scientist glasses! And they interact with Arlo as he rediscovers how to be the best ball-catcher in the neighborhood and picks up a new favorite pastime along the way-reading! One out of five school-age children needs glasses. In this inventive, interactive (and now revised) picture book created by Barney Saltzberg, the bespectacled author of Beautiful Oops!, who charms young readers and their parents with a perfect light touch and joyful spirit, kids get to do just what Arlo does to solve his problem. Take Arlo: He’s a shaggy, free-spirited dog who loves to play catch, until one day he can’t. And every parent will want that child to know that glasses are cool and fun and enable us to do the things we want to do. ![]() ![]() Every child who wears glasses will know just how Arlo feels, and will feel better because of it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Khakpour’s disease, which is detailed in the book’s last chapters, is chronic, late-stage Lyme disease, which she assures the reader is a CDC-diagnosed case. Personally, however, I don’t know what to make of her latest book. She’s had a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and taught at Ivy League schools.Īll this is to say that her writing has been well-received by other writers. The author is critically acclaimed for her novels, short stories and essays and has been published in Elle, The New Yorker, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. It was to that end that I read Sick: A Memoir by Porochista Khakpour. As a nurse who has a belief in holistic medicine, I’m always fascinated by what these writers have to say to us.
